The Bundesrat welcomes that the Commission is planning contingency measures to prepare for the substantial and negative consequences which a no-deal Brexit would have on the fishing sector. Therefore, the Bundesrat welcomes the Commission’s proposal to grant financial support from the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) to anyone affected by temporary shut downs of fishing vessels. However, the Bundesrat views such a shutdown of fishing vessels as a mere last resort. Due to the high economic importance of British maritime waters for German deep-sea fishing, maintaining the EU’s access to them as well as the current possibilities to exchange fishing quotas should remain the primary goal in negotiations with the United Kingdom.
